A friend loaned me this rental movie, knowing that I have every copy of Vogue magazine for years past. It is a love-hate relationship of long standing. I hate the thin girls and I hate that I care about hating the  thin girls. Watching this movie was pure joy for fashionistas. It had suspense –will the magazine finally close on time; sadness- when the Rodartes are cut from the magazine; poignancy-when the art decorator spends hours setting up a shoot that isn’t used and humour-every time Andre Leon Talley is on screen. It is also actually an interesting look at a very tightly wound woman. Does she ever let down her guard and laugh? I think daddy did some Freudian number on her. Ironically, fashion which is supposed to be fun, looks anything but in this film.

Review – Lebanon

Brilliant tale of Hell on Wheels

If you loved Das Boot, you will absolutely adore Lebanon. It is the most claustrophic film I have ever seen. It is also one of the best photographed, directed and acted film of the year. This film is bleak, colourness and unrelenting. It is not political in any particular way. It is another metaphorical film about the inanity, absurdity ,cruelty, endless cycle of war that could have happened anywhere and is in fact in full force around the world.

I was mesmerized by the direction of this film and the acting. If the tale of woe is your cup of joe, don’t miss it.

She couldn’t disappear fast enough for me.

This movie tried to do what Blood Simple did so much better years ago- be a low budget, twists and turns surprise thriller with an unexpected ending. It failed miserably. I had no sympathy for any of the characters, least of all the whiny Alice character of the film’s name. Didn’t care what happened to her or her two abductors. Wasn’t surprised by the twists and turns or the ending. No really cute boys or girls.

If you want to see this type of thriller re-rent Blood Simple.

Paul McCartney Conference at ACC

You are the best performer I have ever seen. You are so at ease on that stage and so unpretentious that you are like the polite boy next door dropping by shyly to play a few tunes

Sir Paul, Sir Paul-  You’re the best of them all

Or

Bay you can drive my car , ring my bell and knock on my door anytime

Dear Sir P.,

You are the best performer I have ever seen. You are so at ease on that stage and so unpretentious that you are like the polite boy next door dropping by shyly to play a few tunes. Your music is timeless and you sang from every generation I’ve been in- an intimate love song to John and a great tribute piece to George. You sang songs you had written for your first wife and  to your kids. You sang and danced and played for three hours with no intermission and never seemed to flag or to resent the audience who clearly adored you and vice versa- from six to 65 +. Your band was excellent, especially that amazing drummer Abe.

When you brought that young girl from Saskatchewan up on the stage to sign her arm , as requested on her sign, and gave her a hug, my heart melted.

The tribute to Canada with the pipe band and the Canadian flag was a special touch that let us know that you were present and accounted for in every way.

I hope you will come back soon to visit your Aunt Edie who emigrated here to Toronto years ago and who was in the audience. Bring her over for tea anytime.

Yours truly,

Louise Binder a.k.a. Velveeta Peron.

Joan Rivers, A piece of Work & Get Low – Real Low

I was never a Joan Rivers fan until I heard her tell (not really ) a joke that as you age no one tells you that not only will your breasts drop but so will your vagina

Joan Rivers, A piece of Work- Indeed

I was never a Joan Rivers fan until I heard her tell (not really ) a joke that as you age no one tells you that not only will your breasts drop but so will your vagina. I was a convert. I finally got her. This documentary is another act of courage by Ms. Rivers. She lets us see the vulnerable side, the generous side, the sad side, the loyal side , the self-critical side, the self- indulgent side, the workaholic side – you name it. She is a very self aware, complex person who can laugh at others and herself.  The only thing we don’t learn is about her parents and what influences created this dynamic person. She is a great role model for how to behave in your 80s- badly.

Get Low – Real Low

I liked this movie a lot although I knew I was being sucked in to feel a certain way about the characters. Robert Duvall was at his peak – another role model for the over 70 set. A real tour de force. Sissy Spacek was mousy and real looking- not all yanked and puffed up lips. I like her quiet understated acting style especially as a foil for Duvall’s great big screen presence. The story was simple and timeless. Boy meets right girl but doesn’t love her , boy meets wrong girl and falls in love, boy pays lifetime price in guilt and pain. It’s all in the acting. This is a character film, slow and easy so if you like the action genre this is not for you. If you want to see a great Duvall performance , go
