I'm reposting as to be able to publish links on Facebook. June 14th, at the Coutyard Marriot, the Canadian Treatment Action Council held a presentation and panel discussion on the latest litterature review and analysis on liver transplants for those who are either HIV or Hep B/C positive, or both. For those who may not know, if one is HIV + they are not able to get a transplant in Canada, nor will any of the provinces pay to have it done in the states. This is the first in an ongoing series to

I'm starting to get excited about heading down to Vienna. My task is forcus on new treatment options, but more importantly, non-drug related issues we face around when to start treatment. What are the guidelines? What are the various views on the data? These are topics where there is no one opinion as the guidelines are changing all the time, and individually, we have many contextual influences on when and if we want to  start treatment. I'll be writing short articles and video interview

Today the International AIDS Society’s 2010 conference in Vienna begins. While delegates are registering, and planning on what to wear for the opening at 7 tonight, I’m reviewing my narrow focus of when to start treatment. When I write, “when to start treatment” I’m not stating whether someone should or shouldn’t begin. What I am referring to is what the studies, researchers and those actually living with HIV are referring to as guidelines. It is no secret that what those of us ac

Setting forth on my quest to find out the latest and greatest from HIV medical establishment on treatment guidelines, I couldn’t think of a better person to speak to than Melanie Thompson, the chair of the AIDS Research Consortium of Atlanta and chair of the International AIDS Society-USA Antiretroviral Therapy Guidelines Panel, who took part in my lunch session on when to start therapy, an the IAS guidelines. After the panel discussion, Melanie was kind enough, foot in cast, to take a few m

IAS-USA 2010 Treatment Guidelines Pt 2. Melanie Thompson

Setting forth on my quest to find out the latest and greatest from HIV medical establishment on treatment guidelines, I couldn’t think of a better person to speak to than Melanie Thompson, the chair of the AIDS Research Consortium of Atlanta and chair of the International AIDS Society-USA Antiretroviral Therapy Guidelines Panel. These are my final two questions that I had for her. Melanie Thompson Part two Many of us who have taken treatment for a long time have seen the guidelines go from

IAS-USA 2010 Vienna - Where the controversy lies.

Coming to the conference, as I’ve already stated, I wanted to find out what has been said about the guidelines.

Coming to the conference, as I’ve already stated, I wanted to find out what has been said about the guidelines. Time and time again I hear the word controversy, so I want to know what that controversy is, and you can make up your own mind on how to think about the when to start treatment issues. My first tip off that there were many unhappy with these guidelines was at the panel discussion (Starting HAART: When to make the dive) with panelist Mark Harrington, the executive director of Treat

I realized I should give some context to the videos. I found three people from the "community" while I still was using video. Kate Webster is from Vancouver and is associated, but not representing BCPWA.  Tony Di Pede is a long time activist associated with too many organizatioans to mention, one would be the Ontario Treatment Network, and Shari Margolese, also is involved in community and shares a spot of the Ontario HIV Treatment Network's Governance Committee over seeing protocol submi

Getting your colours done. Which season are you?

I wrote this for Poziam, a social networking site for folks who are, well you know. Some of it maybe repetitive. I hadn't posted my colour assssement from the conference. I really wanted to post while on the road from my Vienna/Budapest/Bratislava trip. My laptop had other plans for me as it chugged along at an ever-slowing pace. For me to accomplish one post with mostly photos it took me sometimes over an hour. After that frustration I was toast. My goal while at the AIDS 2010 conference was to
